Malden 5K races have a storied history going back 38 years.
When Dave McGillivray ran from Medford Oregon to Medford, MA in 1978, he finished at the Malden Irish American Club. The club is right across the town line from Medford and was probably the best place for Dave to finish his epic run.
The official story is that he finished at Fenway Park, but I got this story directly from Dave. Maybe he continued to Fenway after stopping in Malden? Dave?
At the time the Mystic Running Club met at the club and Dave became an honorary club member the day he arrived. The Mystics have moved, but their roots are in Malden.
While Malden only has 6 5Ks, they do have one of the longest running 5Ks in the area. It’s unfortunate that there are no races all summer in Malden. There seems to be an opportunity there for a group to set up a race in June before it gets too hot.

Established in 2002, this is the second longest running 5K in Malden and a favorite among local runners. These USATF races routinely attract over 200 runners and have discount registration fees for students, so it’s perfect for your kids.
If you live north of Boston and want to run an early spring race, this one is for you. They have been doing these races for 16 years and have a reputation as a well managed event.

The MEA starting hosting their 5K in 2013. Due to construction, they had to cancel the race for 2016, and has not been scheduled for 2017.
The race draws around 200 runners and often includes The Mayor and other local officials. This race benefits the Bread of Life and is sponsored by many local Malden businesses including New England Coffee.
Be sure to check the MEA Facebook page for their 2019 race date.
September TBD, 2019 11:00 AM
This running event is a 5K and a 10K. The Irish American Club has been hosting this race for 37 years and 2016 will be their 38th annual road race. This is one of the longest running local races in the Greater Malden Area. Many of my older friends have fond memories of races they ran here many years ago. This race draws local officials such as the mayors of Malden and Melrose.
A little support from City Hall can go a long way.
I ran the 10K in 2015 and had a great time. The course is mostly flat with one good hill after the Fellesway crosses Salem Street near the Immaculate Conception Church. The day I ran the 10K was a blazing hot day and many runners struggled. Here is a mapmyrun map with elevation.
The turnout is around 250 and they throw a great party with live music afterwards. It was so close to my house I even walked to the race!
The Club web site currently does not have a listing for the race and they seem to have a Facebook page for each year’s race. This is another race you will want to check on as the date draws near.
