2023 Somerville 5K Race Directory

Updated March 25th, 2023

The 2023 Somerville 5K Race Directory is still waiting for race dates for most races. Stay tuned for updates!

Davis Square is the most popular location for Somerville 5K race events. Assembly Row and the DCR Blessing of the Bay boat house on The Mystic River are also popular locations for 5K races in Somerville.

Somerville 5K races range in size from a few hundred to a few thousand runners. Some are party events geared towards a younger crowd, and some are family oriented and great to bring your kids to.

The list of Somerville 5K races changes yearly. COVID-19 was tough on races and we lost a few Somerville 5Ks. But many have returned and the crowds seem to be returning also.

If you are managing a race that is not on this list, send your information to – [email protected]

This race was cancelled in 2020, 2021, and 2022. It is still listed on the SRR web site, but I cannot find any recent information.

This is a Somerville Road Runners production at Assembly Square. In addition to the 5K, there is a “Fast Mile” race that requires all runners to finish the race in 10 minutes or less.

Rás na hÉireann

19 March | 11:00 AM | Sunday – 2023

Ras Na Heirnann 5K, Somerville 5K race

2023 registration was $42.00

After a few years off due to construction and  COVID-19, The Ras is back for 2023!

In 2018 this race had 1,340 finishers. Based in Davis Square the Rás na hÉireann was one of Somerville’s largest 5K races.

This race draws some of the best 5K runners in New England. In 2018 the top four runners ran a 5:00 or less pace! 37 runners ran a 6:00 or less pace.

Many hundreds more ran your pace. So don’t be intimidated.

Mark Kenneally of Dublin, Ireland, set the course record of 14:19 in 2006. Molly Huddle, of Providence, Rhode Island, set the women’s course record of 15:59 in 2010.

So if you want to compete with some of the best 5K runners around or just go for a fun run with your friends, this mid-September race is for you.

With a strong St. Patty’s and Irish theme, this race attracts a young crowd and is always a great time. I do see a few kids in strollers, but this is generally not a family focused event.

Somerville Homeless Coalition Road Race

1 October | 9:00 AM | Saturday  – see you in 2023

In 2020 this race was cancelled due to COVID-19.

In 2021 the race returned to Davis Square with 450 runners. And in 2022 there were only 371 runners.

This race used to draw around 1,000 runners and is trying to build back after COVID-19.

I ran the race a few years ago and in 2022. Both times it was well organized and everyone seemed to have fun. I’m not sure why participation declined this year.

As always, they had plenty of food for everyone and the kids had a great time feasting on all of the good stuff donated by the races sponsors.

Registration for 2022  was $30. And if you raise $250 and your registration was FREE.

I would recommend this race for the kids.

Somerville Jingle Bell Run

18 December | 11:00 AM | Sunday

Bill Rodgers and Andy, Jingle Bell Run

This race always draws a large, festive crowd. And you never know who you will meet.

2023 registration is not open yet.

Believe it or not, there is plenty of free parking in Somerville for this event.

I’ve run this Davis Square 5K several times. It’s always brisk but not bone crushing cold. If you like big races, this one is for you!

In 2019 over 1,400 runners finished this race, many in costume!

In 2019 we hung out with Bill Rodgers and several other marathon champions at The Burren. One of my last race events before COVID-19 changed our world.

Jack’s Abbey sponsors the post race party at 8 Somerville bars. This is definitely a party race, so leave the kids and keys at home! The Red Line station is right around the corner, so why risk it.

Enjoy a fun race with friends, get into the holiday spirit and let someone else do the driving.

Shwag for this race includes a t-shirt, finisher’s medal and jingle bells.

Malden 5K Race Directory 2021

Malden 5K races have a storied history going back 40 years.

When Dave McGillivray ran from Medford Oregon to Medford, MA in 1978, he finished at the Malden Irish American Club. The club is right across the town line from Medford and was probably the best location for Dave to finish his epic run.

The official story is that he finished at Fenway Park, but I got this story directly from Dave. Maybe he continued to Fenway after stopping in Malden?

At the time the Mystic Running Club met at the Malden Irish American and Dave became an honorary club member the day he arrived. The Mystics have moved, but their roots are in Malden.

Malden used to have as many as 9 5Ks including one of the longest running 5Ks in the area. Some races never grew large enough to be sustainable and their sponsoring organizations cancelled them. COVID certainly hasn’t helped.

Please support local non-profits in your area by running these races. They may not be as flashy as bigger races, but your registration fee helps your friends and neighbors in need.

The Malden Irish American Road Race 5K and 10K

6 September | 10:00 AM | Monday

This running event is a 5K and a 10K. The Irish American Club has been hosting this race for 38 years and they continue the tradition in 2022.

This is one of the longest running local races in the Greater Malden Area. Many of my older friends have fond memories of races they ran here many years ago.

I’ve run the 10K three times and had a great time. The course is mostly flat with one good hill after the Fellsway crosses Salem Street near the Immaculate Conception Church. In 2018 I ran the 10K on a blazing hot day and many runners struggled. Here is a mapmyrun map with elevation.

The turnout is usually around 250 runners with a great party, live music afterwards and raffles afterwards.

Proceeds benefit the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.

2021 registration was $30 for the 5K or 10K.

FOOGI 5k Haunt Jaunt

malden 5k racesFOOGI, or Friends of Oak Grove, is a community group that supports the Malden neighborhood of Oak Grove.

Appropriate for a 5K Haunt Jaunt this 5K goes around two cemeteries.

2020 would have been the 15th year for the community, family event. Costumes are encouraged for this child friendly event.

The race was based out of the Malden YMCA.

This race has been discontinued.

Malden Road Race 10K

TBD October | 9:30 AM | Sunday

2020 would have been the second running of this race. I’ve included the race in this 5K directory because we don’t have a lot of races in Malden.

The race was moved to October so the weather will be nicer (cooler) than it was for the inaugural running.

There is a great after party with plenty of food from Piantedosi Baking Co, Dom’s Sausage & Hoff’s Bakery. And cold beverages from Idle Hands!

I ran the 10K in 2018 and it was a well organized and fun race. My Malden Road Race 10K Review

2018 RESULTS

This race have turned into the Malden Half and 5 Miler – and postponed in 2021 – stay tuned for updates.

Everett 5K Race Directory 2021

I’m hoping some of these races will be revived and possibly go virtual in 2021.

Everett 5K Race Directory

So far there are no races in the Everett 5K Race Directory for 2021.

It looks like none of the Everett 5K race events survived COVID-19. Many were not run in 2019 and none of them even went virtual in 2020.

I’ll give this directory a few more months. If I can’t find any races by March/April I’ll just close this listing out.

If you have information on new races please email me at [email protected]

Perhaps the casino will sponsor a community 5K to help support the many worthy causes in Everett?

Virtual races seem to be pretty easy to organize and you can attract runners from all over the country who are interested in supporting your cause.

FSI Foundation for Autism 5K Run/Walk and Fun Fest

TBD April, 2021

Everett 5K race

2018 was the 4th and possibly the last year for this Everett 5K race. In 2016 this race drew 300 runners from the Greater Boston Area (GBA).

This is a small locally organized race that raises funds to help families who have family members with autism.

This race has been discontinued.

Jared’s Run 5K

This race has been Cancelled

Everett Recreation Center at 47 Elm Street

The Connor family invites you to join them at the starting line for the seventh annual running of Jared’s Run to raise money for their son, Jared and his fight against Sanfilippo Syndrome.

Sanfilippo Syndrome is a terminal genetic disorder affecting children. These children are born healthy but over time lose their ability to walk, talk and even eat.

Money raised from this event will help the Connor family give their son access to the best vitamin and dietary supports as well as participation in experimental treatments that are not covered by insurance. Additional funds will be donated to Team Sanfilippo to support research into Sanfilippo treatments and eventually a cure.

This is a small, family friendly race for you and your kids to enjoy.

The race is based out of the Everett Recreation Center at 47 Elm Street.

2021 race information is not available yet.

Run Well my Friends,

Andy
