Fruit Fly Invasion

It’s that time of year again.

The Fruit Fly Invasion is on!

The weather is warm and any fruits or veggies left out attract fruit flies. I’m pretty sure we bring home a fresh batch each year from the grocery store.

One solution is to put all of your fruits and veggies in the fridge, but who likes cold, brown bananas?

Some fruit needs to sit out at room temperature to ripen and get soft enough to eat, like pears or nectarines. When we bring fruits and vegetables home from the grocery store we often bring home fruit flies. In the winter they die or never hatch. In summer temps the living is easy for fruit flies.

There are many solutions to the problem, but I came up with a novel way to end our fruit fly problem the other night at dinner.

I was having a glass of wine with dinner the other night. As I drank my wine I noticed a few pieces of cork floating in my glass. As I tried to fish them out, I realized I had a dead fruit fly in my glass! A few minutes later I had another dead fruit fly in my glass. At this point I decided to give up drinking. The glass of wine anyway!

My wife said that one remedy for fruit flies is apple cider vinegar. The sugar in the vinegar attracts the flies and then they drown. We had been trying this solution for a few days but the cup was still empty. There is also sugar in wine and I was having great success collecting fruit flies while just trying to have a glass of wine with dinner.

If you have fruit flies in your house try poring the dregs from your next bottle of wine into a glass and leave it on the counter near your fruit. I think you will find this a handy, organic solution and a great way to use those last few drops of wine.

Live well my friends,

haha – I ended up with a couple in my glass one time last week and well, I drank them. Oh well. ๐Ÿ™‚ Bananas are a big one, for sure … and since we didn’t buy new ones and I just have a bunch frozen, we haven’t gotten more.

But that is a good idea …

We love bananas. An easy fruit to eat, no mess.

I’ve tried this and it works ๐Ÿ™‚ Another thing to remember is fruit flies lay their eggs in water or on damp things – get rid of wet dish cloths and rags, and don’t invite them into standing water in the sink or glass on the counter ๐Ÿ™‚

Good idea. We hang a dish clothe on the oven handle. It seems to dry quickly.
Last year they seemed to gather in our bathroom off of the kitchen. I’d go in there with a hand towel and swat them out of the air! They probably like the water in the bathroom.

A glass of water with a lemon wedge in it works well also. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I noticed that when I used to drink. Sadly I can’t have wine in my house. I’d be likely to drown in the booze along with the bugs. ๐Ÿ™

I’ll try bgddyjim’s solution, though. Also, my mother-in-law has a Venus flytrap that seems to catch quite a few. That could be fun.

I like the Venus Flytrap idea. That would be fun to watch. Just like watching a spider doing it’s business.
Jim doesn’t keep wine around either. The water with lemon is a good idea, but probably not as fun to watch as the Venus Flytrap
